HOMESTEAD EXTENSION OF FLORIDA’S TURNPIKE
The SR 821 (HEFT) Widening Design-Build project began north of SW 184th Street (Eureka Drive) and extended approximately five miles, terminating immediately south of SW 104th Street (Killian Parkway). SR 821 (HEFT) is a major north-south, limited access urban toll facility with 65 mph design speed. SR 821 (HEFT) is an integral part of Florida’s Strategic Intermodal System (SIS), and is a designated hurricane evacuation route that was recently declassified as an Urban Freeway.
Improvements provided additional capacity, express lanes, operational and safety improvements, as well as new east-west extension of SR 874 ramp bridges from east of the C-100 Canal bridges along SR 874 connecting to SW 128th Street west of the SR 821 (HEFT)/SR 974 Interchange. The scope of work included widening of SR 821 (HEFT) mainline to add multiple travel lanes, a NB and SB express lane, modifying the SR 821 (HEFT)/SR 874 Interchange, and providing bold landscaping improvements throughout the corridor. Improvements also included ramp modifications at SW 152nd Street, SW 117th Avenue, SW 120th Street, and Snapper Creek Service Plaza. The project included: Five (5) new bridges (Three Category 2 structures, Two Category 1 structure); Seven (7) bridge widenings; Two (2) bridge removals/demolition; and One (1) partial bridge removal/demolition.
